Medicine RVG 14829 AV

Claims
Nicotinell belongs to a group of medicines that are used as a stopping aid
with smoking.
Nicotinell is a patch that you apply to the skin, similar to a patch that contains a
medicine in the side that sticks to the skin.

What is this medicine used for
This medicine is used to relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms in
nicotine dependence when you want to quit smoking.

Not to be used with
- when you don't smoke or only occasionally
- you are allergic to nicotine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Composition
Active substance: Each transdermal patch contains 17.5 mg
nicotine in a 10 cm² patch and releases 7 mg of nicotine per 24 hours.
Excipients: basic butylated methacrylate copolymer (Eudragit E 100), polyester film coated with aluminum, acrylate-vinyl acetate copolymer (Duro-Tak 387-2516), medium-chain triglycerides (Miglyol 812), paper 26 g/m², siliconized, aluminum-coated polyester film, brown ink

Dosage
To increase the chance of success in smoking cessation, you must stop smoking completely during treatment with Nicotinell patches.
Nicotinell transdermal patches can be used as monotherapy (patches only) (see below 'Monotherapy') or – in the case of severe dependence – simultaneously with other nicotine replacement medicines such as chewing gum or lozenges (see below 'Combination therapy').
Nicotinell patches should not be used by smokers under the age of 18 without prior medical advice.

Three different strengths of Nicotinell transdermal patches are available: 7 mg/24 hours, 14 mg/24 hours and 21 mg/24 hours.

The correct strength for you is determined on the basis of the number of cigarettes you smoke daily or with the Fagerström test. This test determines your degree of dependence on nicotine. With the result of this test you can determine which strength is most suitable for you.

Fagerstrom test:
When you wake up, when do you light your first cigarette?
- less than 5 minutes - 3 points
- 6 to 30 minutes - 2 points
- 31 to 60 minutes - 1 point
- after 60 minutes - 0 points

Do you find it difficult not to smoke in places where it is prohibited?
- Yes - 1 point

Score from 5 to 6: you are moderately dependent on nicotine.
Nicotine replacement therapy will likely increase your chances of success. Ask your doctor if
pharmacist for advice in choosing the most suitable therapy for you.

Score from 7 to 10: you are strongly to very strongly dependent on nicotine.

Nicotine replacement therapy is recommended to help you quit smoking.
Treatment should be with an adequate and appropriate dose

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for specialized advice and support for
quit smoking.
The strength of Nicotinell transdermal patches may need to be adjusted
during treatment because your dependence on nicotine changes. Sometimes the
nicotine dose in Nicotinell transdermal patches too low for you, but sometimes too high.
The dose should be increased if you experience withdrawal symptoms such as:
- a persistent urge to smoke
- irritation
- sleep disorders
- agitation or impatience
- concentration disorders
Consult your doctor or pharmacist. It may be necessary to adjust the dose.
The dose should be reduced if you experience symptoms of overdose, such as:
- nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea
- profuse saliva production
- to sweat
- headache, dizziness, hearing impairment, visual disturbances
- a general feeling of weakness (being lethargic)
It is then absolutely necessary to adjust the treatment with the help of your doctor or pharmacist.

Monotherapy (treatment with plasters)
Standard treatment in three stages:
Step 1: Will Help You Quit Smoking
Step 2: Confirm smoking cessation and begin to phase out nicotine dependence
Step 3: Helps end the treatment.
The full treatment takes an average of 3 months.
However, the duration may vary depending on the individual response; the entire duration of the
monotherapy can be up to 6 months.
